Resolving Resolutions
Being a regular gym rat, I always dread January. The parking lot will be packed, there will be lines for the machines, the cardio area will be overflowing. The locker room jammed with tons of well meaning people all adorned in their shiny new workout clothes they received for Christmas. I have hope though, February is right around the corner and it will all be cleared out by then. Those well intentioned resolutions will be forgotten.
One definition of ‘resolution’ is a completion, a finish to something started. In music a ‘resolution’ is the progression from dissonant harmony to consonant harmony, from a dominant to the root; a sense of tension and release. I like this idea much better in terms of a ‘end of year resolution‘ rather than a ‘new year resolution‘. ‘New Year resolutions’ seem to me to be an exercise in futility. It’s easy to start stuff… I have a 100 year old house full of projects I’ve started to prove it. What is more difficult is ‘resolving’ things that you’ve begun.
Are there things from last year or the year before or 10 years ago that you made a ‘resolution’ about or started that you have yet to ‘resolve’ or finish? I think it’s better to clean the slate a bit at the end of the year before loading it up again with empty promises. Are there relationships you’ve yet to reconcile? How about your relationship with God? Bringing things to a ‘resolution’ is tougher, it requires action NOW, but brings immediate reward and satisfaction. Making new ‘resolutions’ may make you feel great now, but how about in a month when you’ve forgotten all about it and fallen short?
I think short term goals make more sense. “Tomorrow I will get to the gym.” “I will watch what I eat at lunch today.” “I will pick up the phone and call my sister now.” “When the kids get home today we will play a board game.” One day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time. This way falling short is not a failure, it’s just feedback you can use to adjust the next small goal. When you make the goal to read the entire Old Testament before bed and fall short, the next night you might make a small adjustment.
I suggest we end the previous year with a Dominant7 to Root progression… finding a release to last years tension… a worthy ‘resolution’.

Added on January 3rd, 2008 at 2:06 pmWho came up with the concept of New Years Resolutions? Aren’t they, by their very nature, meant to be broken? It does bug me to see the gym so crowded in Januray and then back to the norm by the end of February. I also think that short term goals make more sense. I think that we overwhelm ourselves with these grandiose resolutions. We set ourselves up to fail. Thus, the cycle begins…

Added on January 3rd, 2008 at 7:53 pmI was telling a friend that, to me, resolutions go against “do not worry about tomorrow”…unless of course I’m resolving not to worry or be anxious which then will leave me to worry about failing on that resolution. It’s a lose/lose
Oh, and this is why I stay away from them gym. Nah…I just hate exercise…I’m terrible, but I really should make a New Years resolution to NOT go to the gym. That way, maybe I actually will! Hmmm….
Happy New Year!

Added on January 3rd, 2008 at 8:37 pmYeah, too big a goal doesn’t allow the ‘flex room’ that is often necessary in real life.
The gym is a good place, just not in January. Chris gets scared of all the doo-rags and grunting though…
I like the reverse psychology… let us know how that works for you.

Added on January 3rd, 2008 at 10:23 pmThat’s a reference to the gym he joined, Planet Fitness. I gave him a hard time because they operate a “No Judgment Zone” policy where “Lunkheads” who grunt and wear bandannas are not welcome. Which means I would not be welcome…
see here
He joined a couple of years ago but I don’t think he’s been yet… Maybe he should do like Tam and make a resolution NOT to go this year…
BTW: maybe I should call him… he seems to have disappeared.

Added on January 4th, 2008 at 12:15 amHAHA! The grunters are disgruntled! That’s funny! I thought it was a joke at first. So if Chris hasn’t been there yet then maybe he’s a closet grunter….

Added on January 4th, 2008 at 9:06 amI’m still here. Just a tad busy, lately.
I joined ONE year ago but you are correct, I have not attended much (it’s only $10 a month and the idea is to try and get back in February, if I can still fit in the door). One reason is that I had to take a part time job, in the course of which during a two hour shift I travel over two miles while intermittenly carrying anywhere from 20-40 pounds. (If the little girls can do it, well so can I.) So it’s like getting paid to work out. Do-rags and grunting are not for me. I prefer tights and Cockney.
I am beginning to see a disturbing side to you, Tam, with your interest in closets and private grunting. I hope this isn’t related to your recent rant about the lack of plumbing facilities in your home?

Good to see ya out again C! What on earth is that part time job. Are you working on the rail road? All the live long day?

Added on January 4th, 2008 at 3:07 pmI like Chris’ description… his job involves wearing tights and talking in a phony english accent…
Man, if I was sure, I could get seated in your section I’d be there every week… what a hoot.

Added on January 4th, 2008 at 3:28 pmFirt of all, my tights are not that ‘little’. And secondly my accent is not ‘phony’ -many of my customers have asked what part of Britain I hail from. There are ways to ensure being sat in a specific section. You just have to know someone.
